Carol Kane says rescuing older dogs is "a wonderful thing" for older owners
Carol Kane, the celebrated actress known for her role in Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, has a message for those considering adopting a dog: don’t overlook the older ones.
In an exclusive conversation with PEOPLE, Kane, 72, emphasized the unique bond that can be formed with an elderly pet, describing it as “a wonderful thing.”
Reflecting on her experiences with her last two dogs, Johnny and Dainty, Kane shared, “The last two babies I had were quite elderly when we got together.” While Johnny was with her for several years before passing away six months ago, Dainty’s story is particularly touching.
When she adopted Dainty, the dog was “so old and blind and weak,” with many advising her that it was a “hospice situation.” However, Dainty thrived under Kane's care, living for another five years.
Kane encourages prospective pet owners to keep an open mind when considering a rescue dog. “It's a wonderful thing if you feel like maybe rescuing an older dog,” she said, noting that while many people prefer a “quote-unquote, ‘cute puppy,’” a puppy’s appeal is fleeting.
She further explains that older dogs often come with the advantage of being housebroken and not requiring the intense physical activity that puppies do, which can be beneficial if the owner is “a slightly older person.”
Kane also highlighted the gratitude and resilience of older dogs, saying, “An older pup really needs a welcome and is so grateful for it.” She believes that with love and care, older dogs can enjoy extended and happy lives.
Though still mourning the loss of Johnny, Kane hinted that she might be ready to welcome another dog into her life, possibly an older one. She concluded by stating, “Pooches are so resilient, and a little love and care goes a long, long way.”
Kane currently stars alongside Jason Schwartzman in Nathan Silver's latest film, Between the Temples, now playing in theaters.
