Sabrina Carpenter reveals origins of ‘Espresso’ in Apple Music interview

Sabrina Carpenter, a rising force in the pop music world, recently sat down with Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1’s The Zane Lowe Show to discuss her latest work. 

Her newest album, Short n’ Sweet, has just been released, featuring the hit singles “Please Please Please” and “Espresso,” which have already made waves across social media.

Interestingly, Carpenter shared that “Espresso,” now a global favorite, wasn’t initially part of her plans for the album. The track has since topped both the Billboard Global 200 and Billboard Hot 100 charts, earning it the title of "song of the summer" from Rolling Stone.

During the interview, Carpenter reflected on the creation of “Espresso,” describing how it emerged during a challenging yet creatively fertile period in her life. She explained that the song came to life while she was in the middle of a tour, moving between Paris and Japan. 

"My mind was in a place where it was like, there is just no concerns right now, I just need to write as I’m feeling," Carpenter recalled. The contrasting environments of high energy and subsequent lulls influenced her songwriting process, leading her to produce what she described as "stuff that was so honest, so emotional, so important."

Carpenter’s discussion with Lowe offers a unique glimpse into the behind-the-scenes moments that led to the creation of “Espresso,” a track she now reflects on with both pride and a bit of humor. 

As Carpenter put it, the song was a "stupid little song," but Lowe was quick to add, "But what a beautiful stupid little song it is, my God."
