The cost of electricity may rise further for Karachi's residents as K-Electric has submitted a request to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) for another price hike.

According to a K-Electric spokesperson, a public hearing will be held on August 29 regarding the Fuel Charges Adjustment (FCA) for July 2024. The request seeks an increase of Rs3.09 per unit.

The spokesperson stated that NEPRA will issue a written decision after reviewing the request. The decision will specify which month's bills the FCA will apply to, following the public hearing.

The spokesperson further clarified that the FCA depends on fluctuations in global fuel prices and the generation mix.

Yesterday, NEPRA had announced an increase in electricity rates for Karachi consumers by Rs5.75 per unit, citing fuel cost adjustments for May and June 2024.

According to a notification issued by NEPRA, the electricity tariff has been raised by Rs2.59 per unit for May and Rs3.16 per unit for June under the monthly fuel cost adjustment mechanism.

The increased charges will be reflected in the electricity bills of Karachi consumers for October and November.

NEPRA clarified that the hike applies to all consumers except electric vehicle charging stations (EVCS) and lifeline consumers, with the additional charges separately itemised in the respective month's bills.
