ISLAMABAD:

The newly appointed Pakistani ambassador to the United States, Rizwan Saeed Sheikh, has officially assumed his diplomatic responsibilities after arriving in the US capital, Washington, DC.

According to the Pakistani mission in Washington, the new envoy took charge on Wednesday. Ambassador Sheikh, who is career diplomat, replaced Masood Khan as Pakistan's ambassador to the US.

The change of command at the Pakistani diplomatic mission in Washington comes at a critical juncture when the US is set to elect a new president later this year.

Like rest of the world, the outcome of the November elections holds significance for Pakistan.

A statement issued by the Pakistani in Washington said on Thursday that the ambassador had a busy day at the embassy. He held detailed meetings with the heads and officers of all the embassy's departments.

Later, the heads of various departments provided the ambassador with comprehensive briefings within their respective domains. Additionally, the ambassador also met with the heads of Pakistan's four consulates in the US via Zoom and received briefings on various matters.

While speaking to the officers, the ambassador emphasised the importance of the over seven-decade-long Pakistan-US relationship.

He stated that the promotion of multifaceted Pakistan-US relations, especially in strengthening bilateral cooperation in economic sectors and enhancing public ties, are among his top priorities.

He further mentioned that the Pakistani community in the US is a valuable asset for the homeland. “Through their hard work and dedication, the community has not only established a unique identity but also represents the strongest link in Pakistan-US relations.”

He assured that every effort would be made to serve the community and provide them with better facilities.

While addressing the officers, Ambassador Sheikh stressed that all energies should be directed toward achieving results-oriented diplomacy.

Yesterday, upon his arrival in Washington, officials from the State Department and the Embassy welcomed him at the airport.

The position of envoy to Washington is one of the most coveted and sought after diplomatic assignment in the Pakistan service. However, it offers both opportunities and challenges given the importance of Washington for Pakistan in terms of bilateral, regional and international issues.
