Oprah Winfrey defends Kamala Harris and criticizes Donald Trump in powerful DNC speech

Oprah Winfrey made an unexpected appearance on the third night of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, where she delivered an inspiring speech that emphasized the contrasts between Kamala Harris and her Republican opponent.

Although Winfrey has largely stayed out of the political spotlight this election season, she urged both viewers at home and the Democrats gathered at Chicago’s United Center to believe in "the best of America" to help the nation navigate this challenging time of intense political division.

Similar to other speakers, Winfrey warned against the agenda put forth by former President Donald Trump and other extreme right-wing groups. “People who would have you believe that books are dangerous and assault rifles are safe,” she said. “That there’s a right way to worship and a wrong way to love.”

Winfrey didn't mention Trump directly, but her intended target was unmistakable. Beware of politicians “who seek to first to divide and then to conquer,” she said. “When we stand together it is impossible to conquer us.”

Winfrey mentioned the controversy over JD Vance’s remarks about “childless cat ladies” in politics, noting that in a crisis, neighbors don’t question political affiliations. She added, “And if the place just happens to belong to a childless cat lady – well, we try to get that cat out too.”

Winfrey identified herself as an Independent and criticized Trump’s recent remark to evangelical voters, suggesting they only need to vote for him one more time.

“You’re looking at a registered Independent who is proud to vote again and again and again because I’m a proud America and that’s what Americans do,” she said. “Values and character matter most of all in leadership and in life. Decency and respect are on the ballot in 2024.”
