Argentina’s World Cup 2026 bid without Messi

Ankle injury rules him out of upcoming crucial qualifiers, world champions rely on Garnacho, Alvarez and others

Lionel Messi has been excluded from Argentina's squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Chile and Colombia due to an ankle injury. The Inter Miami star has been sidelined since sustaining the injury during the 2024 Copa America final, and both his club and country are prioritizing his recovery.

Argentina will face Chile on September 6 and Colombia on September 10 as they continue their bid to qualify for the 2026 World Cup in North America. Despite Messi’s absence, Argentina boasts several attacking talents, including Alejandro Garnacho, Giuliano Simeone, Julian Alvarez, Lautaro Martinez, and Valentin Castellanos, who will lead the charge in Messi's place.

Messi has also missed key matches for Inter Miami, including the MLS All-Star game and the Leagues Cup. While Inter Miami is set to return to action against FC Cincinnati on August 24, Messi has yet to resume training as he focuses on regaining full fitness.

Lionel Messi, widely regarded as one of the greatest footballers of all time, has been the heartbeat of Argentina’s national team for nearly two decades. With seven Ballon d'Or titles and a World Cup triumph to his name, Messi has consistently redefined the game with his vision, dribbling, and finishing. His absence from the upcoming qualifiers is a significant blow to Argentina, but his influence and legacy remain an inspiration to both his teammates and fans worldwide. As he focuses on recovering from his ankle injury, the hope is that Messi will return stronger, continuing to lead his country as they aim for back-to-back World Cup victories.
