Governor JB Pritzker’s Chicago gun violence policy and third term may depend on DNC outcome
Democrat JB Pritzker, currently serving his second term as governor, is gaining prominence within the party and will have the opportunity to speak at the convention tonight, showcasing his state throughout the week.
Pritzker was instrumental in bringing the convention to Chicago, and his performance will impact both the state's reputation and his own, depending on how the event unfolds, including how protests might affect the atmosphere and if it benefits Vice President Kamala Harris.
During his tenure, Pritzker has supported various initiatives such as a statewide child tax credit, healthcare for undocumented immigrants, and expanded public preschool programs. He has played a key role in improving Illinois' financial situation, upgrading the state's credit rating, and reducing state debts, although public pension funds remain underfunded. Additionally, he has generated revenue by legalizing recreational marijuana and sports betting.
However, Republicans criticize him for ongoing issues in Illinois, including gun violence in Chicago, population decline, and high property taxes. Pritzker's re-election in 2022 brought him national attention, particularly for his critiques of Republican nominee Donald Trump. In his victory speech, he condemned Trump and his supporters, asserting their lack of patriotism.
As a fundraiser for President Joe Biden, Pritzker successfully advocated for the convention to be held in Chicago and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris after Biden withdrew from the race. Recently, he has intensified his criticism of Trump, labeling him as a “congenital liar” and a “flatulent old man.” Pritzker has not yet announced whether he will seek a third term in 2026, as Illinois has no term limits for governors.
