Joaquin Phoenix's dream sparks 'Joker: Folie à Deux' musical gamble

Director Todd Phillips reveals how Joaquin Phoenix's dream about Arthur Fleck performing onstage inspired the sequel.

In an exclusive interview with Variety, director Todd Phillips disclosed the surprising inspiration behind the bold musical direction of the upcoming "Joker" sequel, "Joker: Folie à Deux."  The seed was planted even before the first "Joker" film achieved its massive success, during a conversation between Phillips and lead actor Joaquin Phoenix.

Phoenix shared a vivid dream he had experienced, in which his character, Arthur Fleck, was performing on stage. This dream resonated deeply with both Phillips and Phoenix, leading them to explore the idea of incorporating music into the sequel's narrative. The concept of Arthur, a character who struggles with social interaction, finding an outlet for expression through music was particularly appealing.

Phillips acknowledges that transforming the gritty, R-rated world of "Joker" into a full-fledged musical is a daring gamble. However, he thrives on taking risks and is confident that this unconventional approach will set the sequel apart and offer audiences a unique cinematic experience.
