'Deadpool & Wolverine' are "party time" not cinema, says Brian Cox
Veteran actor Brian Cox has expressed his concerns about the current state of cinema, blaming the overwhelming presence of blockbuster superhero franchises for its decline.
Speaking at the Edinburgh International Film Festival, Cox lamented that cinema has "lost its place" due to the dominance of Marvel and DC films.
He believes television has stepped up to fill the void left by meaningful cinema, offering more nuanced and engaging storytelling. Cox acknowledges that superhero movies like "Deadpool & Wolverine" are financially successful, but argues they ultimately lead to a diluted cinematic experience.
He even called out actors like Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, stating that they are capable of more substantial work but are drawn to superhero roles for the box office success.
Cox himself has appeared in superhero films, having played William Stryker in "X2: X-Men United." However, his recent comments suggest a longing for a time when cinema prioritized storytelling and character development over spectacle and special effects.
