Star Wars: The Acolyte cancelled after one season amidst review bombing and controversies

Disney+ has pulled the plug on 'The Acolyte', confirming that the Star Wars series will not return for a second season.

 Despite garnering positive reviews from critics, the show faced significant backlash from a portion of the audience, leading to review bombing and online controversies.   

Some viewers perceived the show as "woke" and targeted its diverse cast and creator Leslye Headland, who identifies as LGBTQ+. Headland and star Amandla Stenberg previously addressed the racist and homophobic backlash, expressing their sadness over the negativity surrounding the show.

While 'The Acolyte' offered tantalizing storylines and introduced intriguing characters, it seems viewership numbers weren't strong enough to warrant a renewal. It's possible that the ever-changing streaming landscape and a perceived erosion of the Star Wars brand's goodwill regarding its series also contributed to the cancellation.

The cancellation marks a setback for the series that was set 100 years before 'The Phantom Menace' and explored the emerging dark side of the Force during the High Republic era.
