Carmaker unveils electric-first brand

Pakistan's energy mix is 41% non-fossil fuel-based, yet the country's oil import bill amounts to $15.16 billion.

KARACHI:

Master Changan Motors Limited has introduced Changan's electric-first brand, Deepal, aiming to support the widespread adoption of EVs in Pakistan.

The unveiling event, held on Friday, featured two models: the LO7, an electric sports luxury sedan, and the SO7, an electric premium SUV.

Pakistan's energy mix is 41% non-fossil fuel-based, yet the country's oil import bill remains, amounting to $15.16 billion.

Despite over 2,000 EVs in Pakistan, mass adoption of EVs has yet to take off. "We have identified four key challenges to overcome in order to accelerate mass EV adoption," said MCML CEO Danial Malik. "First, we need to introduce the right pure EV products at the right prices. Second, we require efficient batteries that support long driving ranges. Third, a nationwide after-sales support network is essential. Finally, we must develop a robust charging infrastructure across 17 cities."
