Saudi Arabia to construct cable car for easier access to ‘Hira’ cave
Saudi Arabia plans to launch a cable car system by 2025 to enhance access to the Cave of Hira, a historic and religious site located on Mecca’s Jabal Al Noor, the government announced.
The initiative, aimed at improving the pilgrimage experience, will connect visitors to the cave situated approximately 634 meters above sea level, around 4 kilometers from the Grand Mosque. This site is revered as the location where the Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) received his first revelation.
The project is part of a broader development plan, which includes the completion of the Hira Cultural District and the opening of three new museums in Jabal Omar, scheduled for the same year. Additionally, the Mount Thor Cultural District, an integrated neighborhood offering various services, will also be launched in 2025.
The Ministry of Hajj and Umrah underscored the significance of Mount Al Noor and the Cave of Hira in Islamic heritage. Jabal Al Noor, or the Mountain of Light, is known for its distinctive shape resembling a camel’s hump and its steep slopes. The cave itself, with a capacity to seat five individuals, holds deep importance for Muslims due to its connection with the Prophet’s early revelations.
Previously, visiting the cave was challenging due to the mountain’s steep incline and rugged terrain. However, the recent inauguration of a paved road has made access easier. Fawaz Al-Muhrej, CEO of Samaya Investment Company, which is overseeing the project, confirmed that the cable car system is set to open in 2025 as final preparations are underway.
