Rare eye surgery restores child's vision
The Al-Shifa Trust Eye Hospital has successfully performed surgery on a three-year-old child born with a rare condition of twin lenses and a white cataract in one eye only the second known case in the world.
Muhammad Ahmad, a resident of Rawalpindi, noticed that his son, Muhammad Musa, had an unusually large right eye compared to his left. Concerned, he brought his son to Al-Shifa Trust Eye Hospital, where doctors discovered the rare condition of two lenses in one eye, a case last reported in India approximately 30 years ago. Under the supervision of Dr Hanif, a team of expert doctors removed one of the lenses and the cataract from the child's right eye in a successful operation, restoring his vision.
Following the surgery, Muhammad Musa's vision has been fully restored, allowing him to lead a normal life. President Al-Shifa Trust Eye Hospital Rehmat Khan said that Al-Shifa Trust Eye Hospital performs around 25 eye surgeries on children daily, offering all treatment free of charge.
Khan emphasised that the hospital does not consider the economic background of the children's parents when providing treatment, ensuring that the entire process is based on merit. The hospital also takes on cases that have been rejected by other medical facilities.
Al-Shifa Trust Eye Hospital is also providing treatment for eye diseases in its branches located in Sukkur, Kohat, Muzaffarabad, and Chakwal. Khan further mentioned ongoing efforts to expand eye care services to other remote areas of the country.
