ANKARA:

Turkiye President Tayyip Erdogan reaffirmed Turkiye's commitment to supporting the Palestinian cause during a meeting with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Wednesday.

Erdogan stated that Turkiye would continue to advocate for increased international pressure on Israel. The two leaders discussed the current situation and the necessary steps to achieve a lasting ceasefire and peace in Gaza, as noted in a statement from Erdogan's office shared on X.

Erdogan condemned Israel's military actions in Gaza, criticising some Western countries for their silence and ongoing support for Israel.

In response to the conflict, Turkiye has not only condemned the war but also suspended all trade with Israel. Additionally, Turkiye has sought to join South Africa's case at the International Court of Justice, which accuses Israel of genocide.

This meeting followed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's address to the US Congress on July 25, which Turkiye condemned. Erdogan emphasised that Abbas has the right to speak in the Turkish parliament, paralleling Netanyahu's opportunity to speak before the US Congress.

Erdogan, who has been a strong supporter of Hamas, also mentioned that Turkiye had plans to invite Hamas' political leader, Ismail Haniyeh, who was reportedly assassinated in Tehran
