14 injured in celebratory firing

People travelling in a car shot dead a youngster when his bike touched their vehicle

HYDERABAD:

As Hyderabad police continue to show unlawful leniency to the people brandishing weapons and those indulging in aerial firing, 14 persons sustained gunshot injuries due to celebrator firing on the eve of August 14. Two persons were also killed in separate incidents of crimes in Hyderabad.

The official sources at Liaquat University Hospital informed that they received 14 injured persons who reported with gunshot wounds. The injured belonged to different localities in City and Latifabad talukas.

Most of the injured came from Phuleli and Paretabad areas. Tens of thousands of people took to the streets on Tuesday night to celebrate the country's independence day. They moved in rallies of cars and motorbikes, creating traffic logjams around them. The traffic regulation remained traditionally lax.

Carrying weapons has become a common sight in Hyderabad even though the Sindh Home Department had imposed a ban on June 4 on the display of licensed weapons across the provinces. Mostly the people moving in the double-cab mini truck display weapons.

Separately, a young man was killed and his friend was injured in a clash between persons riding on a motorbike and travelling in a car. The incident happened near Liberty Plaza in the limits of PS Market. Atif sustained a gunshot in his neck and he later died at the hospital while his friend Shahzeb Zahid was injured with a bullet wound in his leg.

Shahzeb told the police that their motorbike met a slight accident with a car. He alleged that three persons travelling in the car disembarked from that vehicle and began hurling abuses. The squabble turned into a violent clash during which the motorbike riders were attacked with a pistol.

In another incident, Waleed Qureshi was allegedly killed by his three friends in the limits of Hatri police station late on Tuesday night. Muhammad Aslam Qureshi, father who staged a sit-in protest along with his relatives outside Hyderabad Press Club, accused Waqar, Zubair and Hina for killing his son.

According to him, his son was taken to a remote location where he was shot dead. The incident was made to appear as one of killing by unidentified persons. Qureshi said the accused persons came to his home and took away his son in their car. The Hatri police have arrested the suspects.
