#BTSPurpleRibbonProject: BTS ARMY fights back against smear campaign

BTS ARMY rallies online to counter misinformation and defend Suga amid ongoing smear campaigns by anti-fans.

BTS ARMY is actively countering the misinformation and smear campaign targeting Suga, also known as Min Yoongi, initiated by anti-fans who oppose the boy band. 

Recently, these anti-fans escalated their efforts by sending wreaths to HYBE headquarters and calling for Suga's removal from BTS following his involvement in a drunk-driving incident.

In addition, reports have circulated in South Korean media accusing Suga of being a ‘bully’ and not taking his military service seriously amidst the DUI scandal, with protests demanding his exit from the group. Neither Suga nor BTS has issued a confirmation or denial regarding these allegations.

In response, BTS ARMY has rallied in support of the group, using the hashtag #BTSPurpleRibbonProject, along with a picture of a purple ribbon and the message: “I, a member of BTS's ARMY, stand united and strong behind all 7 members of BTS. We won’t stand idly by while they are bullied, harassed, or misrepresented by the online trolls and the media. I show my love and support for BTS with the #BTSPurpleRibbonProject.”

Another statement from ARMY highlights the origins of the Purple Ribbon Project in 2018, which was initially created to protect BTS members in crowded areas. The statement reads: “In 2018, the BTS ARMY initiated the Purple Ribbon Project... It was a memorable moment of mutual respect, solidarity & love between BTS & ARMY. In 2024, as BTS members face a wave of defamation attempts, misinformation & harassment by antis and K-media, the sentiment of this project continues to resonate... We refuse to accept any bullying, mistreatment or unfairly biased narratives of trolls and media authorities.”

Suga's recent drunk-driving controversy also became the subject of a misleading social media trend, the #SugaChallenge, which initially appeared to glorify drunk-driving. However, it was later revealed that this narrative was orchestrated by fans of other K-pop groups. To combat this misinformation, ARMY launched counter-trends like #FAKECHALLENGE and #KoreanMediaBeProfessional to clarify the situation and address inaccurate reporting.

Despite the negative press, Suga, who has apologised and expressed his intent to cooperate with authorities, continues to receive strong support from his global fanbase.
