MTV VMAs shift date to avoid clash with US Presidential Debate
The MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) have been rescheduled to September 11 to avoid conflicting with a televised US presidential debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and Republican former President Donald Trump. The debate was announced last week by ABC News for September 10.
The VMAs will now take place on September 11, with a ceremony scheduled to start at 1am UK time at the UBS Arena in New York's Long Island. The event will support the non-profit 9/11 Day, which organises the September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance, and Tuesday's Children, which serves the families of 9/11.
The 2024 VMAs will feature a lineup of performers, including Sabrina Carpenter, Camila Cabello, and Chappell Roan. Carpenter has six nominations, while Roan has been recognized for the first time. Taylor Swift leads the nominations with 10 nods, including eight for her collaboration with Post Malone, "Fortnight."
Swift will compete against Ariana Grande, Bad Bunny, Eminem, Carpenter, and SZA for artist of the year. She will also face Carpenter in the song of the year category, along with Teddy Swims, Jack Harlow, Beyonce, and Kendrick Lamar.
Last year's ceremony saw Swift take home nine awards, bringing her total number of VMA awards to 23. Beyonce still holds the record with 28 awards. The VMAs will be broadcast live on Paramount+ and MTV.
