Suspect, victims had quarrelled over harassment of girl

A man released by the police a day earlier killed two people after over a dispute in the Sattiana area.

According to local residents, the dispute had begun over the harassment of a girl in the 90GB area. The victims Afzal and Babar Virk had a heated argument with the suspect Atiqur Rehman over the matter.

The sources said ASI Wilayat Ali of Sattiana police station had intervened, taking action against both groups. However, the police released Atiq on Sunday night, who subsequently opened fire on Afzal and Babar, killing them on the spot. The victims suffered bullet wounds to the chest and abdomen.

The relatives of the victims protested by placing their bodies on a main road, blocking traffic and shouting slogans against the police. They accused area police officials of corruption and demanded justice.

SSP Investigation Rana Abdul Wahab and other officers arrived at the scene and negotiated with the protesters. They assured the relatives of the victims of justice and ordered the suspension of the ASI, following which the protesters dispersed.

According to the police, Atiq had been harassing the sister of Ramzan, a friend of the victims, whose mother Akbar Bibi had complained to the police helpline 15.

The ASI who came to the spot had arrested Atiq, Ramzan and others.

However, the suspect was released reportedly after reconciliation.

Following his release, the suspect murdered Afzal and Babar who were with Ramzan.

The Sattiana police registered a case against Atiq and said they were conducting raids to arrest him. The city police officer also sought a report from the SP of Jaranwala regarding the allegations against local police officials by the protesters.
