Tom Daley, the most decorated British diver in history, has announced his retirement from competitive diving following his participation in the Paris 2024 Olympics. The 30-year-old diver secured a silver medal in the synchronised 10m platform event alongside Noah Williams, adding to his impressive collection of five Olympic medals.

Daley, who was one of Team GB’s flagbearers at the opening ceremony, confirmed his retirement in an interview with Vogue. Reflecting on his decision, he said, "It was emotional at the end, up there on the platform, knowing it was going to be my last competitive dive. But I have to make the decision at some point, and it feels like the right time. It’s the right time to call it a day."

Daley made his Olympic debut at the age of 14 during the 2008 Beijing Olympics, where he finished seventh in the 10m platform event. Over his career, he won a total of five Olympic medals, including gold in the synchronised 10m platform at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. His career also includes two individual world titles, making him one of the most accomplished divers in the sport.

Daley, who resides in Los Angeles, had considered competing in the 2028 Olympics but ultimately decided to retire, stating that it was important for his family to see him dive at the Olympics. "I was eager for it to be done… but when I walked out, and saw my husband [Dustin Lance Black] and kids and my friends and family in the audience, I was like, you know what? This is exactly why I did this," Daley said.

Looking back on his career, Daley expressed pride in his achievements, telling the BBC, "To currently be Britain’s most decorated diver… I feel so incredibly proud. When I look back, I’m really, genuinely satisfied with what I’ve done." Daley now plans to spend more time with his family and adjust to life after diving.
