Fall 2024 Trend Prediction: Are Skinny Jeans Making a Comeback?
As autumn approaches, nothing kicks off the season quite like a fresh pair of jeans. It really sets the tone for one’s wardrobe.
While other essentials for the cooler months like cosy cashmere sweaters, sleek leather boots, or a new handbag also signal the shift to the winter months, there's something uniquely satisfying about choosing a pair of jeans that will become a go-to for the coming months.
Denim is the ultimate versatile piece— if you are unsure on what to wear, it should be your go-to! It looks good with any and every top!
Surprisingly, skinny jeans, once considered passé, are making a major comeback this fall. This resurgence is partly fueled by the revival of Indie Sleaze, a trend that is characterised by sweaty dance floors, low-slung skinny jeans, polo shirts, ballet flats and edgy indie rock. Coined in 2021, the term captures the gritty, vibrant, and unapologetic vibe of a music and fashion scene that first emerged in the early '90s.
Today, indie sleaze is driven by Tumblr nostalgia and spearheaded by party anthems from artists like Charli XCX’s Brat.
Searches for skinny jeans on Depop have surged by 74% over the past year, solidifying their place in the current fashion cycle. Additionally, fashion-tech account (that has Vogue's stamp of approval) 'Data, but make it fashion' has conducted an analysis on over 1200 posts referencing skinny jeans over the past year. Skinny jeans are likely to return since not only did they increase in popularity for last fall but they have managed to already increase in popularity by 23% in the last month.

The skinny jean has always been a polarising piece, oscillating between being ‘in’ and ‘out’ of fashion. You either love it, or you really despise it. Recent years have favoured more relaxed, baggy silhouettes, but whispers of the skinny jean’s revival are growing louder. From the Miu Miu runways in Milan to the wardrobes of style icons like Bella Hadid, it’s clear that this snug-fitting style is making a comeback—but with a modern twist.

Just like with any trend making a return, the key is to update it with a contemporary edge. While some may still hold a grudge against skinny jeans (with NPR even celebrating their departure from the spotlight), their comeback is hard to ignore, especially with endorsements from fashion heavyweights like founder of Miu Miu, Miuccia Prada.

Never underestimate the impact of denim on denim, no matter if you're rocking flared jeans or a sleek skinny fit. Opt for a clean, slim cut and pair it with a matching denim top or jacket. Add a trench coat for a touch of sophistication if you're in the mood. The goal is to keep the look polished and effortlessly chic.

If your skinny jeans are too long and causing an undesirable bunching at the hem, go for an above-the-ankle length instead. Pair them with socks and loafers for a polished look. This style raises the leg opening by 11 inches, avoiding that clingy feel around the ankles.

Capris are trending this summer and are seen as a twist on the skinny jean revival. Slim-fit denim capris are set to make a comeback for the upcoming season. Though more of a summer trend, it's worth keeping in mind for a fall that is not as chilly.
