I-Day preps gain momentum

Children take to streets with horns, making atmosphere lively yet challenging

RAWALPINDI:

As Independence Day approaches, the streets of Rawalpindi are alive with activity, albeit a bit noisier than usual.

Children and youths have taken to the streets with small and large horns, making the atmosphere lively yet challenging for residents.

The beginning of August has ushered in a wave of patriotic fervour, with markets, neighbourhoods, and streets across the city bustling with the sale of national flags, badges, and themed garments. Temporary stalls have mushroomed along roadsides, offering a variety of Independence Day merchandise, including flags, clothes, and horns.

The district administration is gearing up to celebrate Pakistan's 77th Independence Day in a grand fashion.

Plans are underway to hoist national flags on the rooftops of government and private buildings, offices, educational institutions, houses, and markets. Government buildings will be adorned with national flags, colourful banners, and electric lights, transforming them into vibrant displays of national pride.

Flag hoisting ceremonies are scheduled for the morning of Independence Day at various government institutions, including the High Court Rawalpindi Bench and the District Bar Association, as well as all universities in the city.

The main event in Rawalpindi will take place at the Government Waqar Al-Nisa Post Graduate College, with the Commissioner and Deputy Commissioner serving as chief guests. In a gesture of goodwill, sweets will be distributed to patients in government hospitals and prisoners in Adiala Jail.

Additionally, a flag hoisting and guard of honour ceremony will be held at Adiala jail, where prisoners will also benefit from sentence reductions and amnesty in celebration of the day.

Government schools will remain open on Independence Day, hosting a variety of activities including celebrations, tableaus, meena bazaars, and debate competitions. The Arts Council will feature an exhibition of historical photographs showcasing Pakistan's independence movement, further enriching the festive spirit.

An Independence Day rally is also planned to bring together citizens in a collective display of national pride.

However, the surge in demand for Independence Day items has led to a noticeable increase in prices. National flags are being sold for prices ranging from Rs300 to Rs1200, while national flag badges are priced between Rs30 and Rs100 depending on size and quality. Children's garments themed for Independence Day are available for Rs3,500 to Rs5,000, and dupattas resembling the national flag are being sold for Rs200.
