Robert Downey Jr. returns to Marvel Cinematic Universe as Doctor Doom and Iron Man
Robert Downey Jr. is making a return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), both as the iconic villain Doctor Doom and as Iron Man, albeit in different contexts. The actor, who famously portrayed Tony Stark/Iron Man, will appear as Doctor Doom in two upcoming MCU films: Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. These films are slated for release on May 1, 2026, and May 7, 2027, respectively. During the reveal at San Diego Comic-Con, the Russo Brothers emphasized the need for “the greatest actor in the world” to portray Doctor Doom, a role they believe Downey Jr. can bring to life.
In addition to his cinematic return, Downey Jr. will reprise his role as Iron Man for a new ride at Disneyland’s Avengers Campus. The ride, titled ‘Stark Flight Lab,’ will feature the actor in his iconic role, guiding visitors through a thrilling experience. The announcement was made at the D23 Expo, where Josh D’Amaro, Chairperson of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, confirmed that the ride is currently in "active development."
