Jordan Chiles' Olympic bronze medal at risk as court overturns score adjustment
Jordan Chiles might lose the bronze medal she earned at the 2024 Paris Olympics, which is her only individual Olympic medal.
On August 10, the Court of Arbitration for Sport overturned an inquiry from Team USA's coach that had increased Chiles’ floor exercise score from 13.666 to 13.766, elevating her from fifth to third place to win bronze.
The court ruled that the inquiry was invalid because it was submitted four seconds past the one-minute deadline and decided to reinstate Chiles’ original lower score.
Following the decision, the International Gymnastics Federation announced that Chiles’ score of 13.666 was reinstated, and Romanian gymnast Ana Maria Barbosu was moved to third place with a score of 13.700. The Federation did not clarify if Chiles would be stripped of her medal.
The court's ruling came in response to an appeal by the Romanian Gymnastics Federation, Barbosu, and teammate Sabrina Maneca-Voinea, who had received the same score and initially placed fourth and fifth, respectively. They requested that they and Chiles all be awarded bronze medals.
After the ruling was announced, Jordan shared a series of broken heart emojis on her Instagram Stories.
The 23-year-old has faced a wave of hateful comments online from users supporting the Romanian competitors amid the controversy, added, "I am taking this time and removing myself from social media for my mental health thank you."
In a joint statement, USA Gymnastics and the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee expressed that they were "devastated" by the court's decision.
