Australian Breakdancer Raygun goes viral with unforgettable moves at 2024 Olympics

As breaking—also known as breakdancing—made its Olympic debut at the 2024 Paris Games, one Australian competitor, Raygun, has captured the internet’s attention with her standout performance. 

Rachael Gunn, better known as Raygun, impressed fans and sparked viral reactions during the women’s b-girl competition on Friday, August 9. 

Raygun, 36, showcased her unique breaking style while representing Australia, and viewers quickly took to social media to share their thoughts. 

"There has not been an Olympic performance this dominant since Usain Bolt’s 100m sprint at Beijing in 2008," one user joked on X (formerly Twitter). 

Another added, "Honestly, the moment Raygun broke out her Kangaroo move this competition was over! Give her the #breakdancing gold."

Despite losing her Round Robin-style matchups against younger competitors, including Team USA’s Logistx, France’s Syssy, and Lithuania’s Nicka, Raygun’s performance left a lasting impression. 

Known off the dance floor as Rachael Gunn, she is also a university professor in Australia, where she studies the cultural politics of breaking.

"It is such an honor and a privilege to be, you know, one of sixteen women from around the world competing in breaking’s debut at the Olympics," Raygun shared in an Instagram video. 

She hopes her participation will inspire a new generation of breakers as the sport continues to grow on the global stage.
