Arshad Nadeem's spectacular performance at the Paris Olympics in which he not only won the gold medal and shattered records, but also won Pakistan's first gold medal in 32 years, was lauded by the whole nation.
Tributes poured in from political parties, the president, prime minister and the Pakistan Army. It was decided, through an unanimously passed resolution by the National Assembly, that the Olympian Arshad Nadeem would be honoured through a civil award.
Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari congratulated Arshad Nadeem on winning the gold medal in the Olympics. He said that Nadeem had become the pride of the entire nation. "By winning a medal for Pakistan, he has illuminated the country's name, and we can hold our heads high.
Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif said that Arshad Nadeem not only won the gold medal, but also set a new world record in the Olympics. Sharif added that Arshad Nadeem gave a beautiful gift to the entire Pakistani nation.
"Arshad Nadeem has become immortal in the history of Pakistan and Olympics by breaking records. The entire nation is proud of Arshad Nadeem. His hard work, dedication and outstanding success make him a role model for young athletes.
The National Assembly on Friday unanimously adopted the resolution to pay tribute to the world record holder. Minister for Law and Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Senator Azam Nazeer Tarar tabled the resolution, saying it was a blessed day for the nation.
Tarar, while paying tribute to the gold medalist athlete, said that Arshad Nadeem had set an Olympic world record by throwing the longest ever javelin throw. "All parliamentary leaders have demanded that the House should pass a resolution to pay tribute to Arshad Nadeem," he added.
"This House felicitates the son of the soil Arshad Nadeem for hoisting Pakistan's flag in Paris Olympics 2024 and securing a gold medal for the nation after four decades," the resolution read.
This House pointed out that Arshad Nadeem, the 27-year old youngster, from a humble background, with his continuous struggle, insurmountable resolve and dedication, affirmed that hardships cannot stop or hinder the path of the daughters and sons of the nation from glory.
The Armed Forces of Pakistan, Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee chairman, and all service chiefs congratulated the nation on the occasion. They said that Nadeem had weaved his name into the history of Pakistan by winning the first individual gold medal in the World Olympics.
"This magnificent achievement is a testament to Arshad Nadeem's tireless work, unwavering determination, and unparalleled dedication, which has become a shining example for the entire nation," read a statement from the military.
Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari also congratulated the national hero who won the gold medal in the javelin throw competition. He said Nadeem made the nation proud by winning the first ever gold medal for Pakistan in individual events of the Olympics. "Pakistan's son Arshad Nadeem made history in the world of Olympics, the nation stands with its hero."
National Assembly Leader of the Opposition Umar Ayub, while paying tribute to Olympian Gold Medalist Arshad Nadeem, said the athlete had made the nation proud after 40 years." He should be given a grand welcome on his return to Pakistan.
MQM Leader Mustafa Kamal said that Arshad Nadeem is our pride, may Allah grant him the opportunity to win more medals for Pakistan. This is also our moment of concern. If the corrupt elements of Pakistan spends even two percent on their talent, then we have world champions in every province."
Praise for the star Pakistan athlete also rang through the Senate meeting. The deputy chairman announced an award for Arshad Nadeem, and passed a resolution to pay tribute to the national hero in the House.
The PTI senator identified the quorum before appearing. On behalf of Ahsan, he congratulated the nation for winning the gold medal at the Olympics and said that Arshad Nadeem had made the country proud.
Deputy Chairman Syedal Khan Nasir said Arshad Nadeem is truly a national hero. He congratulated the athlete on behalf of the nation and the house, urging that Nadeem be rewarded on his return. Senator Zeeshan Khanzada said that a resolution in favor of Arshad Nadeem should also be passed by this House.
Just rewards
Apart from the highly justified praise on Nadeem, he was also showered with rewards for his outstanding performance. On behalf of the Punjab government, chief minister Maryam Nawaz announced a whopping Rs100 million reward for the javelin ace. In addition to this, the Sindh government will also make the Olympic gold medalist's pockets a little heavier after announcing he is to be given Rs50 million.
In addition, Sindh Governor Tessori announced Rs1 million, and singer Ali Zafar and cricketer Ahmed Shahzad Rs1 million each. Also, Karachi Electric (KE) has decided to contribute Rs2 million for Nadeem, and the World Athletics Federation will give a US$50,000 winning prize.
