KARACHI:

Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer globally and the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths, said oncologists at a recent workshop titled "Emerging Therapeutic Strategies in Colorectal Carcinoma," held at Dow International Medical College.

The event was chaired by Pro-Vice Chancellor of Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) Dr Jahan Ara Hasan.

The workshop featured prominent panelists including Prof. Adnan A. Jabbar from Ziauddin Medical University, Dr Najeeb Naimatullah from Aga Khan University Hospital, Dr Sadaf Khan from Aga Khan University Hospital, and Dr. Nasir Ali, also from Aga Khan University Hospital.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Jahan Ara Hasan said that DUHS treats all cancer patients free of charge, including those from foreign countries, up on visa verification.

She also mentioned that the Sindh government allocates a budget for each cancer patient. Jahan Ara also announced that DUHS plans to introduce radiology services soon.

Dr Batul Memon, a consultant oncologist at DUHS, noted that colorectal cancer is the third most prevalent cancer worldwide and the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths. Citing a report, she said, in 2022, over 1.9 million cases were diagnosed globally, leading to more than 930,000 deaths.

While screening programmes in developed countries have reduced mortality rates, cases are increasingly being diagnosed in middle-aged individuals. Dr Memon also discussed advancements in diagnosis and treatment.

Prof Adnan A. Jabbar addressed "Advances in Neoadjuvant Therapy for Locally Advanced Rectal Cancer." He highlighted significant improvements since 2004, including advancements in surgery, radiation planning, and rectal MRI imaging.

He discussed Total Neoadjuvant Therapy (TNT), its application, and the role of tri-modality therapy, including the use of molecular markers in treatment planning.
