Traffic Pile-up

KARACHI:

Two persons were killed and five others injured when a recklessly driven truck slammed into a car, triggering a multiple-vehicle collision near Defence Morr on Thursday. A large number of passersby gathered at the scene but the truck driver managed to escape while taking advantage of the chaotic situation.

A Defence police team rushed to the crash site and ferried the casualties to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC). The goods transport truck ran over two motorcycles before ramming into a white-colour car from the rear which smashed into a minibus ahead, officials and witnesses said. One motorcycle was trapped under the wheels of a Chippa ambulance which was also hit in the deadly pile-up.

According to rescue officials, one of the deceased has been identified as 34-year-old Owais, while the second victim, who appears to be in his early 60s, has yet to be identified. The injured have been named as 55-year-old Asghar, 30-year-old Amna, 30-year-old Haider, 40-year-old Adil, and 22-year-old Israr. All of them have been shifted to JPMC where they are currently under treatment.

Inspector Ghulam Nabi Afridi, SHO Defence police station, said that all the victims of the multiple-vehicle collision were motorcyclists, while the car driver miraculously escaped unharmed. "We have seized the truck and efforts are ongoing to identify and arrest its errant driver," he added.
