Henry Cavill’s cameo in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ left him feeling sick from cigar smoke, director says
Henry Cavill's surprise cameo in "Deadpool & Wolverine" showcased his dedication but left the actor feeling woozy from cigar smoke, according to director Shawn Levy. Cavill, known for his previous role as Superman, took on the part of "Logan" in the film, a character affectionately dubbed "the Cavillrine" by Ryan Reynolds, who plays Deadpool.
Levy explained the context behind Cavill’s involvement in an interview with The New York Times. "It was not long after everything went down with DC, and word came that Henry was being replaced as Superman," Levy said. "Given that Deadpool is in constant conversation with culture, it felt like a great opportunity to cast Henry Cavill in a part that he would kick ass at, but also to poke fun at that other comic-book-founded movie studio."
In the film, Deadpool travels through alternate dimensions in search of a replacement for Wolverine (Hugh Jackman), encountering Cavill's Logan smoking a cigar. Levy praised Cavill's commitment to the role, noting, "I think we all were, including poor Henry Cavill, who not only had that pumped-up muscular body but kept that cigar lit and in his mouth for the entirety of the shoot day." Levy added, "I remember hearing the next day that Henry was sick to his stomach because he had been inhaling cigar smoke for eight hours straight, but never once did he waver."
Cavill humorously referenced the role on Instagram, posting a photo from the shoot and writing, "To be safe, I shaved the mustache off for this one. Just the mustache."
Levy also discussed other cameos and near-misses in the film with Entertainment Weekly. While Walker Scobell, known for his role in Levy’s "The Adam Project," was intended to appear as Kidpool, the role was scrapped due to Scobell’s growth spurt. Additionally, rumors of a Taylor Swift cameo were unfounded, with Levy stating, "Nothing I said or did was going to make [the Swift cameo rumors] quiet down until this movie came out."
One planned cameo that did make it was Chris Evans reprising his role as Johnny Storm/Human Torch in the post-credits scene, which Levy described as "non-negotiable."
"Deadpool & Wolverine" is currently in theaters.
