Bollywood star targeted in Istanbul mugging attempt
Bollywood actor Ashwath Bhatt was assaulted by a robber while walking in Istanbul's Beyoglu district on Sunday.
The actor, known for films like Raazi and Sita Ramam, was on holiday in Turkiye when the attack occurred.
Bhatt was making his way to Galata Tower, a popular tourist spot on the European side of Istanbul, when he was approached by a man wielding a chain.
"He hit me on the back before I could understand what was happening," Bhatt said. He believes a gang was behind the attempt to snatch his bag.
Despite the shock, Bhatt resisted, surprising the assailant.
"They weren't expecting me to fight back," he added.
A nearby taxi driver intervened, prompting the robber to flee after saying something in Turkish.
The driver advised Bhatt to report the incident to the police.
The actor expressed disappointment over the attack, emphasising the need for tourists to report crimes to prevent similar incidents.
"People often romanticise Turkey, but crime needs to be addressed. If we don't report it, these incidents will only increase," Bhatt stated.
After the assault, Bhatt approached a police patrol but was redirected to the tourist police.
A formal complaint has yet to be filed as the process remains ongoing.
This incident highlights the potential risks for tourists in major cities, underscoring the importance of vigilance and reporting crimes to ensure safety.
