Halsey opened up about experiencing a miscarriage during a concert at age 20, sharing their story on the SHE MD podcast with Mary Alice Haney and Dr. Thaïs Aliabadi.
Halsey, 29, shared a deeply personal experience during their appearance on the SHE MD podcast on Tuesday, August 6. The singer revealed that they had a miscarriage at the age of 20 during a concert. "I miscarried during a concert," Halsey said. "I started miscarrying before the show."
The "Lucky" singer explained the difficult position they were in, as it was early in their career and the concert had significant corporate and media partnerships. More importantly, "there [were] a thousand kids who waited all day long to get into this show and see me."
Halsey described the measures they took to perform despite the miscarriage. "I ended up just putting on an adult diaper," they shared. The performance lasted 45 minutes, after which Halsey vomited in the parking lot. "I went to a hotel and I was sick all night. I remember sitting in the bathtub because I just didn't know what to do with all the blood," they recalled. The next morning, they had to catch a flight to Canada.
Reflecting on the concert, Halsey said, "It's funny because when I look at it now, I see myself just white and sweating, and my voice is different. My voice is guttural. I sound and look like a different person."
Halsey expressed feelings of isolation, as miscarriage stories they had heard often came from married women who later had successful pregnancies. "I remember thinking to myself, 'I'm just 20 years old. I should be able to carry a baby.' I didn't want to be pregnant. I was way involved in my career," they added. Halsey welcomed their son Ender with ex Alev Aydin in July 2021.
The singer spoke about the complex emotions they experienced after the miscarriage, including relief, confusion, guilt, and grief.
