Karachi flooded and powerless after heavy rain

Lack of drainage facilities has worsened traffic flow, with many residents stuck in gridlock

Heavy rain in Karachi has resulted in flooding on roads and power outages across several areas, causing significant inconvenience to residents.

The continuous downpour since Sunday evening has affected more than 300 feeders, plunging the city of lights into darkness and waterlogged streets.

The rain began at 8pm on Sunday and has been ongoing intermittently, leading to traffic jams as water accumulates on the roads.

The areas affected by both light and heavy rain include Liaquatabad, Nazimabad, Federal B Area, PIB Colony, Bahadurabad, Tariq Road, Korangi, Landhi, Malir, Shah Faisal Colony, Bhains Colony, Surjani Town, North Karachi, and several others.

This rain has been the heaviest of the monsoon season so far, exacerbating issues for residents as water collects in various parts of the city.

The lack of drainage facilities has worsened traffic flow, with many residents stuck in gridlock. The city's drainage system proved inadequate, as no measures were taken to prevent rainwater accumulation, severely affecting traffic.

The power supply was disrupted in many areas after more than 300 feeders of K-Electric were affected.

The electricity supply remained suspended until late at night in multiple regions, adding to the residents' woes.

In the aftermath of the rain, the shortcomings of local authorities were laid bare, including the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, the administration of 25 towns, the Water Corporation, the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board, the Karachi Development Authority, and others.

Despite forecasts from the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) predicting rain from August 4 to 7, municipal staff were absent, leaving citizens to bear the consequences.

Areas that received heavy rain reported hundreds of motorcycles breaking down, along with reports of cars stalling due to the flooding.
