George RR Martin confirms development of seven new Game of Thrones spin-offs

George RR Martin announces seven new Game of Thrones spin-offs in development

George RR Martin, the creator of the Game of Thrones universe, has confirmed that HBO is developing seven new spin-off series following the success of the original show and its prequel, House of the Dragon. Speaking at the Oxford Writers’ House, Martin revealed that the new projects include four animated and three live-action series.

Currently, two of these spin-offs are known: the live-action series Aegon the Conqueror and Ten Thousand Ships, and the animated series The Golden Empire and Sea Snake. However, Martin hinted that the initial plans might have evolved, as he previously mentioned that two animated projects were scrapped.

Despite the ambitious slate, not all projects may come to fruition. Martin acknowledged this reality, referencing the scrapped Jon Snow sequel and another series that even filmed a pilot but did not advance. HBO remains committed to maintaining high standards for the franchise, especially after the mixed reception to the final season of Game of Thrones.

House of the Dragon has been performing well, with strong viewership numbers and positive feedback, which bodes well for the future of the franchise. The series draws heavily on Martin's source material, a trend expected to continue with the upcoming A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.

Martin's involvement in these new projects suggests a hands-on approach, despite his reputation for delaying the long-awaited Winds of Winter. He remains optimistic about the potential for success, particularly with the animated adaptations. "Given how many fantastic animated adaptations we've seen, those shows could be incredible," he remarked.
