Wholesale markets go on strike

Wholesale markets across the city have embarked on a 3-day shutter-down strike in protest against the recent increase in electricity prices and the imposition of withholding tax.

All wholesale markets, including Dalgran Bazaar, Namak Mandi, Narankari Bazaar, Ganj Mandi and Hamilton Road Market, remained completely closed on Thursday.

The strike has led to the suspension of supply of essential commodities such as pulses, rice, flour, gram flour, grocery items and spices in many parts of the district. Moreover, closing wholesale markets has also rendered hundreds of labourers and workers unemployed, affecting their daily livelihood.

Additionally, loader rickshaws and load transport vehicles operating in these markets have also come to a standstill, as these vehicles remain parked in the markets on account of the strike. The protests are set to continue today.

Wholesale Markets Association President, Asif, stated that the recent increase in electricity prices and withholding tax has led to the destruction of businesses. Wholesale customers in the wholesale market have also declined. Asif attributed this decline to the government's economic policies which have led to widespread unemployment, inflation and the closure of many industries. He highlighted that the association has no choice but to go on strike in response to these challenges.
