Former BBC news presenter Huw Edwards pleaded guilty to possessing indecent images of children, including those of a child as young as seven. The BBC admitted it knew of his arrest in November 2023 but took no action until charges were filed in June 2024.

Edwards was suspended by the BBC in July 2023 following allegations in The Sun newspaper, but the Metropolitan Police found no evidence of criminal behaviour at that time. The current charges stem from a separate investigation.

The BBC stated it was "shocked" by Edwards' "abhorrent behaviour" and that he would have been dismissed immediately had he been charged while employed. However, the broadcaster faces criticism for not taking action sooner, despite being aware of the arrest.

Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy has called for an urgent meeting with the BBC's director general to discuss the organization's handling of the case.

Edwards admitted to having 41 indecent images, including some in the most serious category. The images were sent to him via WhatsApp by a convicted paedophile.

The BBC reiterated that it kept its corporate management separate from its independent editorial functions during this period.
