Increase in power rates expected by Rs2.63 per unit

Higher power rates likely for next billing cycle

Electricity prices are likely to increase by Rs2.63 per unit for consumers, as the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has submitted a request to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA).

The proposed hike is aimed at adjusting monthly fuel costs.

The government-owned distribution companies have already been charging higher rates, and this adjustment will add to the burden on consumers.

The CPPA has cited the need for a monthly fuel cost adjustment (FCA) as the reason for this proposed increase.

NEPRA will hold a hearing on the CPPA's request before making a decision.

If approved, the new rates will apply for one month, further straining the budgets of households and businesses alike.

This development comes amid ongoing economic challenges, where rising fuel prices have significantly impacted the cost of electricity production.

Consumers are bracing for higher bills in the coming months as NEPRA reviews the proposal.

Earlier, NEPRA had reserved its decision on K-Electric's request to raise electricity rates in Karachi by Rs5.45 per unit.

The application, submitted under the Fuel Price Adjustment (FCA) mechanism, sought an increase for May and June.
