Djokovic outduels Nadal in Olympics, wins 60th showdown in straight sets

Top-seeded Djokovic defeated 14-time French Open champion Nadal in a blockbuster second-round clash at Roland-Garros

Novak Djokovic, the top seed, defeated 14-time French Open champion Rafael Nadal in a thrilling second-round match at the Paris Olympics. Djokovic secured a 6-1, 6-4 victory, making this their 60th and possibly last encounter.

The match at Roland-Garros saw Djokovic, a 24-time Grand Slam champion, clinch his 31st win against Nadal.

Their rivalry, which began on the same clay courts in 2006, reached another high point with this win. "I’m very relieved," Djokovic said. "I was in control but had a moment of sloppiness that gave him a chance."

Both players showed signs of wear, with Djokovic sporting a protective knee strap and Nadal’s thigh heavily taped.

Despite this, Djokovic dominated, making Nadal chase the ball across Court Philippe Chatrier, where Nadal has previously claimed 14 Grand Slam titles.

Djokovic took an early 4-0 lead with two breaks and held for 5-0 before Nadal finally won a game. The first set ended decisively when Nadal hit a forehand wide.

Nadal, battling injuries this season, managed only four points off Djokovic’s serve in the opening set.

In the second set, Djokovic again broke Nadal twice for a 4-0 lead. Nadal found a brief resurgence, breaking back twice to level at 4-4 after Djokovic double-faulted.

However, Djokovic responded with a crucial drop shot to break for 5-4 and sealed the match with an ace.

Nadal, despite this singles defeat, still aims for a gold medal in men's doubles, partnering with Carlos Alcaraz.
