'Alien: Romulus' director Fede Álvarez strives for modernization and terror with a young cast

Fede Álvarez discusses his approach to modernizing the franchise and honouring the legacy of the original films.

Fede Álvarez, director of "Alien: Romulus," aims to revitalize the franchise with a fresh perspective. While respecting the legacy of the original films, he seeks to modernize the series for contemporary audiences. Álvarez's unique approach involves a young cast, creating a raw and relatable experience as they face the terrifying xenomorph.

"We kept the perfect elements of the original movies untouched, but we also introduced new elements to make it modern and new," Álvarez explained. He emphasized the importance of honoring the franchise's legacy while offering something fresh and exciting.

One of the most notable changes is the focus on younger characters. Álvarez believes this allows for a deeper connection with the audience, as their innocence and vulnerability heighten the terror. He also noted that younger characters' deaths are more impactful, making the stakes even higher.

During a Variety Studio interview at San Diego Comic-Con, Álvarez and the cast, including Cailee Spaeny and Isabela Merced, discussed the film and its connection to the franchise's legacy of strong female characters. Spaeny praised Sigourney Weaver's groundbreaking role as Ripley, while Merced highlighted the intelligence and resourcefulness of the female protagonists in "Alien: Romulus."

Álvarez also shared his excitement over Ridley Scott's positive reaction to the film, stating, "I couldn't be more grateful that he let us do it." With a promising blend of classic elements and innovative twists, "Alien: Romulus" aims to deliver a thrilling and terrifying experience that resonates with both longtime fans and new audiences.
