'I did not cry': Ranbir Kapoor opens up about father Rishi Kapoor's death

Bollywood star reveals his relationship with Rishi Kapoor was distant, though filled with love and respect

Bollywood top actor Ranbir Kapoor, often seen with his mother, actress Neetu Kapoor, has always showcased a close bond with her. However, he rarely speaks about his late father, Rishi Kapoor.

In a recent interview, Ranbir opened up about his relationship with his father and the emotional turmoil he faced after his passing.

Speaking to Nikhil Kamath on his YouTube channel, Ranbir revealed that he did not cry when his father passed away. Despite having a great bond with his mother, his relationship with Rishi Kapoor was distant, though filled with love and respect.

Ranbir admitted, “It’s funny, I didn’t cry when my father passed away.” He recalled the night the doctor informed him it was his father's last night, and instead of tears, he had a panic attack, feeling overwhelmed and unable to express himself.

“I don’t think I have grieved,” he confessed, reflecting on his struggle to understand the loss.

When asked if he felt guilty about not crying, Ranbir said he didn't feel as much guilt as his father did while passing away. During their time in New York for Rishi Kapoor’s treatment, Rishi often expressed his feelings. Ranbir shared a poignant memory of his father coming to his room one day and breaking down in tears.

“I felt guilt that I didn’t have the grace to let go of the distance between us and hug him,” he admitted, highlighting the emotional gap that existed between them.

Ranbir also spoke about his struggle with smoking, which he eventually overcame after becoming a father to his daughter, Raha Kapoor. This significant life change motivated him to quit the habit.

In a candid moment, Ranbir revealed that he had tried therapy in London before his father’s death but found it unhelpful. He struggled to fully express himself to the therapist and felt that the sessions taught him to manipulate life rather than genuinely cope with his feelings.

On the professional front, Ranbir is gearing up for his role in "Ramayana" and will also be seen in "Love & War" alongside Alia Bhatt and Vicky Kaushal. Reflecting on his upcoming film "Animal," Ranbir shared that it helped him transition from a boy to a man, despite initially being scared upon reading the script.
