Netflix is facing calls for a boycott after reports emerged that its co-founder, Reed Hastings, made a substantial donation to Vice President Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign.

Harris, who is now set to run against Donald Trump, aims to become the first female president, following Joe Biden’s decision not to seek re-election. While endorsed by figures like Biden and Barack Obama, Harris remains a contentious candidate due to her political history.

In July 2024, Hastings donated $7 million to a super PAC supporting Harris, making headlines and stirring controversy among Netflix subscribers.

The donation, reported by Reuters and confirmed by Variety as Hastings’s largest single campaign contribution, has led many subscribers to threaten cancelling their subscriptions.

The hashtag #CancelNetflix is trending on X, formerly Twitter, with many people taking screenshots of their cancelled subscriptions and posting them under the hashtag.

Harris’ campaign raised $81 million in its first 24 hours, highlighting Silicon Valley’s support for Democratic candidates.
