JI calls for cancellation of pacts with IPPS

Demands withdrawal of 'unjust taxes' levied on electricity consumption

KARACHI:

Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Karachi Chief Munem Zafar has demanded of the government to abolish the slab system in electricity bills, remove excessive taxes, and annul illogical agreements with the independent power producers (IPPs).

He said this while talking to the media after seeing off to another batch of party workers to Islamabad.

Zafar asserted that peaceful protests and sit-ins for legitimate demands were constitutional and democratic rights of the people.

He added that no authority can deny the nation its due rights and warned against any attempts to disrupt the peaceful protests.

Zafar voiced disappointment over the government's decision to impose Section 144 in Islamabad. He reminded the government of the 29-day long sit-in outside the Sindh Assembly building and declared that the Islamabad sit-in would continue until relief was granted to the common people.

He criticised the government for adhering to the International Monetary Fund's (IMF) directives and warned that if the people's voice was suppressed, protests would escalate nationwide.
