Meghan Markle's thoughts on Kamala Harris’ historic run for vice president
Meghan Markle was a supporter of Vice President Kamala Harris during the 2020 presidential election.
Following their departure from the royal family and return to the US in 2020, Markle and her husband, Prince Harry, Markle had a conversation with Gloria Steinem about women in politics, focusing particularly on Harris, who was then running for vice president alongside Joe Biden.
“The heart of the Democratic Party has been Black women,” Steinem, 90, said. “And now there is a potential vice president who is Black, and that’s exciting.”
The "Suits" alum, 42, responded that she was "excited" to see Harris, who has Jamaican and Indian heritage, on the ballot.
“I’m so excited to see that kind of representation,” Markle said.
“You know, for me, being biracial, growing up, whether it was a doll or a person in office, you need to see someone who looks like you in some capacity,” she added.
“As many of us believe, you can only be what you can see. And in the absence of that, how can you aspire to something greater than what you see in your own world? I think maybe now we’re starting to break-through in a different way.”
Harris, 59, has also expressed support for Markle in the past.
In 2019, she retweeted a video of Markle, a mother of two, discussing how the press negatively impacted her mental health during her pregnancy with her first child, Archie.
“This is incredibly important. We must remember that it’s a sign of strength to show emotion,” the former prosecutor wrote.
“Meghan, we are with you.”
In June 2020, Harris shared the speech Markle delivered virtually to her high school's graduating class, where she addressed the deaths of numerous Black Americans caused by police.
