Vice President Kamala Harris expressed gratitude and determination following President Joe Biden's endorsement of her as the Democratic nominee for the 2024 presidential election.
Biden, in a significant move, announced his withdrawal from the race and threw his support behind Harris in a statement released on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday.
Harris, 59, responded promptly, acknowledging Biden's decision as "selfless and patriotic." In a statement shared by the Biden campaign, Harris began by praising Biden's legacy and decades of service to the nation, emphasizing his integrity, commitment to family, and love for the country.
"I am honored to have the President’s endorsement," Harris remarked. "My intention is to earn and win this nomination."
Harris, who made history as the first woman, first Black person, and first person of Indian descent to hold the office of vice president, also reflected on her personal connection with Biden through his late son Beau Biden.
She highlighted Biden's qualities as a leader and expressed determination to unite the Democratic Party against Republican nominee Donald Trump's "extreme Project 2025 agenda."
"We have 107 days until Election Day. Together, we will fight. And together, we will win," Harris concluded in a rallying call to supporters.
Biden's decision to step aside came amidst growing pressure and concerns over his ability to defeat Trump following a debated performance and polling data.
The endorsement of Harris marks a pivotal moment in the Democratic race, with Harris now positioned as the front-runner to lead the party into the upcoming election.
