“This was very silly, and he should not be on trial,” one of the jurors commented

Two jurors who were part of Alec Baldwin's Rust case, which was recently dismissed, have shared their perspectives on the trial, emphasizing their belief that the shooting was an accident.

Gabriela Picayo and Johanna Haag, speaking to The New York Times, revealed their doubts about the prosecution's case against the actor following the tragic incident on the set of Rust in October 2021, where cinematographer Halyna Hutchins lost her life.

The case against Baldwin centered on the accidental discharge of a firearm he was handling, which also injured director Joel Souza. The incident led to Baldwin facing a criminal charge, which was ultimately dropped on July 12, 2024, after his defense team argued that critical evidence had been withheld by the prosecution.

Reflecting on their deliberations, Haag, identified as juror No. 7 and working in advertising and marketing, expressed how the case against Baldwin weakened over time. She mentioned that emotional footage from law enforcement, showing Baldwin visibly shocked and saddened after the shooting, convinced her that it was indeed an accident rather than an act of negligence or intent.

"I thought, you know, ‘What’s going on here? What is happening?’" Haag recalled feeling sorry for Baldwin after learning about the dismissal of the case due to undisclosed evidence.

Picayo, juror No. 9 and a scientist, echoed similar sentiments, pointing out that as an actor, Baldwin shouldn't have been expected to possess detailed knowledge of firearm safety on set. She emphasized that Baldwin likely relied on the expertise of professionals like armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, who was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in connection with the incident.

The jurors' statements underscored their belief that the tragedy was a result of unforeseen circumstances rather than criminal negligence on Baldwin's part. Despite not reaching a verdict due to the case's dismissal, both jurors indicated a shift in their perception throughout the trial, leaning towards the view that prosecuting Baldwin may have been unnecessary.

Baldwin, who has expressed gratitude for the support he received during this challenging period, acknowledged the dismissal in a social media post, thanking his supporters for their kindness toward his family.

The case's outcome has left many questions unanswered about the responsibilities on film sets and the implications for safety measures involving firearms in the entertainment industry.
