Russia intercepts US bombers near border

Fighter jets dispatched to Barents Sea as strategic bombers approach

MOSCOW:

Russia announced on Sunday that it had intercepted two US strategic bombers approaching its border. The Russian Defence Ministry reported that its "means of airspace control" detected air targets over the Barents Sea nearing Russian territory.

In response, Russian fighter jets were dispatched to identify the targets, which turned out to be a pair of B-52H strategic bombers from the US Air Force. The bombers altered their flight path after the Russian jets approached, ensuring no border violations occurred.

"The flight of the Russian fighters was conducted in strict accordance with international airspace rules over neutral waters and with all safety measures," the statement added.

US authorities have yet to comment on Russia's claims.
