KARACHI:

Three children lost their lives in the past five days due to criminal negligence on part of the PPP government, said the Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Karachi Ameer Munem Zafar demanding compensation for the victims' families.

"A minor spell of rain has unmasked the reality behind towering claims by the Sindh government, the KMC and the mayor," the JI leader said at a press conference held at Idara Noor-e-Haq, the JI Karachi headquarters, on Sunday.

Later in the day the JI leader also offered funeral prayers for 12-year-old Saleem in North Nazimabad. The child lost his life in a drain in which he was swept away by urban flooding. He said while addressing the presser that 38 major drains in Karachi have been overflowing as the government failed to clear them before the rain.

He said that the mayor was directly responsible for water supply and sewerage in the city, whereas the supply and drainage systems totally collapsed in Karachi.

Talking about the loss of lives, he said that three innocent children lost their lives in the past five days due to criminal negligence on part of the PPP government and the K-Electric. He demanded compensation for the victim families.

He added that 12-year-old Saleem got electric shock and then got swept away in the Gujjar Nullah due to urban flooding. He said that the union council chairman himself tried to rescue the victim but could not succeed.

A few days ago, he said, two children lost their lives in a sewerage main hole at Memon Goth, Malir in the union council of the PPP deputy mayor, whereas the UC falls in the constituency of another PPP lawmaker. It was the fourth incident in the same area, he said.

He further said that there was no machinery to handle the post flood situation and the PPP was directly responsible for it as the party was enjoying rule not only in the Sindh Assembly but also in the city council, whereas the occupation mayor was also heading the water and sewerage corporation.
