HYDERABAD:

The mercury has risen sharply in Hyderabad as the suspension of wind has exacerbated the scorching conditions for the residents of the second largest urban centre of Sindh. The spike in temperature has triggered a surge in cold drinks demand amid acute shortages of ice and yogurt.

As per weatherman's prediction, there is no respite in sight as extreme heat and humidity are likely to persist on Monday. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) reported a maximum temperature of 40 degrees Celsius in Hyderabad on Sunday, with humidity at 46 per cent.

The city baked in intense heat throughout the day with literally no wind. Frequent power outages added to residents' woes forcing them to stay indoors. Roads and markets looked deserted with very thin vehicular traffic. To escape the sizzling heat, residents, especially young men, flocked to canals to cool off. Ice and yogurt were in short supply citywide due to high demand caused by the extreme heat. The sale of cold drinks also saw a spike, with huge rush seen at drink stalls.

PMD forecasts Hyderabad will continue to experience hot weather with suspended airflow on Monday, and temperatures between 38 to 40 degrees Celsius.
