Railways denies favouritism in tenders

Follows rules and regulations in purchasing locomotives.

ISLAMABAD:
Pakistan Railways has said that its administration is not influenced by any politician and is taking decisions on its own and on pure merit.

The Railways stated this in reference to a news item titled “Scam in the making: tender for locomotives favours US companies” published in The Express Tribune.

According to a press release, “Pakistan Railways is currently passing through its history’s worst financial crisis that is mainly attributed to decrease of revenue generation through passenger and freight services. There are certain factors involved in Railways disaster but major one is non-availability of reliable locomotives.”

It says “the incumbent management of Pakistan Railways is very committed and putting in sincere efforts to improve efficiency that must be appreciated. Furthermore, it is giving top priority to transparency in all matters associated with the operation of Railways and strictly following prevalent rules and regulations.

“The courts allowed the Railways to procure locomotives as per its technical requirements in a transparent manner. In order to comply with the orders of the courts, the Railways took long time in finalising technical specifications which are in line with PPRA Rules 2004. The technical specifications are wide open and generic, giving equal opportunity to reputable international manufacturers and not any specific manufacturer ie EMD. It is Pakistan Railways’ discretion to procure locomotives suitable for its existing infrastructure.” PRESS RELEASE
