33 bodies found as city withers under deadly heat

Doctors fail to attribute cause to most of the deaths, while police say they are probing

KARACHI:

The discovery of 33 bodies, many of them unidentified and apparently substance abuse victims, in various neighbourhoods of the metropolis over the past 24 hours has sparked widespread concerns.

It was not immediately known what caused these deaths, though the megalopolis remains in the grip of unusually hot weather these days.

According to rescue officials, six men were found dead at various locations, including II Chandragar Road, Lyari’s Chakiwara, Baloch Chowk, Jahanabad, and Lashari Muhallah areas, Superhighway, New Sabzi Mandi, Purana Golimar, and Boat Basin.

Another 13 bodies were discovered in other parts of the city, the rescuers said, adding that most of the deceased, suspected to be drug addicts, are speculated to have succumbed to drug overdoses exacerbated by the hot weather. The bodies were shifted to the mortuaries of the Edhi Foundation and Chhipa Welfare.

Apart from that, one body was found in Korangi while another was discovered in New Karachi. The third body was found near Gulistan-e-Jauhar.

Meanwhile, the body of a 60-year-old, identified as Hassan, was found on the road near Sona Chandi Hall in Madina Colony of Korangi. A fifth body was discovered near Khurshidpur graveyard.

The body of a 35-year-old unidentified man was found on a footpathin Landhi. Meanwhile, another unidentified 35-year-old person was found dead on a sidewalk under the Malir 15 flyover.

In Korangi’s Allahwala Town, the decomposed body of an elderly man was found in a house near Amina Bakery. The deceased, who appeared to be in his seventies, could not be identified immediately.

Another unidentified man, who appeared to be in his fifties, was found dead on a sidewalk in Cantt. A third body was found near Allahwali in New Karachi. The deceased, who appeared to be in his thirties, was taken to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.

Meanwhile, the body of an unidentified 40-year-old man was found on a footpath in Pak Colony.

A Chippa ambulance drove it to Civil Hospital. The body of an unidentified 45-year-old man was discovered on a footpath in Quaidabad.

Also, the body of a 60-year-old man, identified as Muhammad Panah, was found on a footpath near Cantt Railway Station.

Surprisingly, the cause of most these deaths remains unknown as doctors say that they cannot speculate until post-mortem examinations are conducted, while police say that they are investigating to find out reasons for such a distressing tally.
