Monsoon rains enter Punjab, bringing much-needed relief from heat

A new monsoon system has entered Punjab, bringing relief from heat and humidity in Lahore and various districts across the province, Express News reported.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecasted monsoon rains across Punjab until July 20. Managing Director of WASA, Ghufran Ahmed, has instructed all operational staff to remain in the field for drainage operations.

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDM) issued an alert, stating, "There is a likelihood of heavy rains accompanied by strong winds in most districts of the province. By 19th July, southern Punjab is expected to experience thunderstorms and heavy rain."

Rainfall measurements recorded 54mm in Jhelum, 47mm in Sialkot, 40mm in Hafizabad, and 19mm in Sheikhupura.

DG PDM, Irfan Ali Kathia, emphasised the need for preparedness, saying, "Relevant departments should remain alert to handle any emergency situation. The provincial control room and all district emergency operation centres are on high alert, with monitoring continuing 24/7 at the PDM control room."

Rescue organisations, including 1122, have been instructed to keep their machinery and staff on standby.

Kathia also advised, "Ensure prompt drainage of water from low-lying areas. Citizens should exercise caution, avoid electric poles and hanging wires. Stay away from dilapidated buildings and keep children from standing water in low-lying areas."

As the rains continue, authorities urge the public to stay vigilant and take necessary precautions to ensure safety.

Earlier this month, Lahore experienced a record-breaking rainfall of 315 millimetres in Tajpura area, shattering a 30-year-old record, according to Express News.

The torrential downpour, accompanied by strong winds, transformed streets and alleys into rivers.

Official figures confirmed that this year's rainfall in Lahore surpassed the previous high of 291 millimetres recorded last year in Lakshmi Chowk.

The Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) reported significant rainfall across various parts of the city, with 130mm in Lakshmi Chowk, 132mm in Mughalpura, and 133mm in Gulshan Ravi.

Other areas also saw heavy downpours: Chowk Nakhuda received 122mm, Iqbal Town 128mm, Qartaba Chowk 125mm, Samanabad 135mm, Airport 71mm, Upper Mall 123mm, Gulberg 41mm, Nishtar Town 129mm, Jail Road 55mm, and Farooqabad 119mm.
