Neil Patrick Harris, 51, has penned a heartfelt tribute following the tragic passing of his beloved golden retriever, Ella.

The actor, known for his roles in "How I Met Your Mother" and as the founder of Wondercade, opened up about his grief in a newsletter on Wednesday, July 17.

In a departure from the platform's usual content, Harris revealed the profound impact of Ella's sudden death, describing it as "terrible" and unexpected.

Ella, who joined the Harris-Burtka family as a Christmas gift in December 2020, was tragically involved in a fatal accident while under the care of a family friend in New Hampshire.

Harris received the devastating news during a vacation with his husband, David Burtka, while their 13-year-old twins, Harper and Gideon, were away at summer camp. The actor recalled the heartbreaking phone call where he was informed of Ella's passing due to a tragic incident involving a tree branch.

Describing Ella as "the single most beautiful golden retriever puppy that has ever existed into our family," Harris reflected on her significance in their lives.

Named after Burtka's maternal grandmother, Ella quickly became a beloved member of their family, cherished by all, especially Burtka and their twins.

Harris shared memories of Ella's arrival on Christmas morning, a moment he described as almost like a scene from a Norman Rockwell painting.

Expressing his struggle to cope with the loss, Harris explained his decision not to share the news on social media immediately, fearing insensitive comments. He emphasized the emotional toll of losing Ella, whose presence had deeply enriched their lives.
